As we endure the relentless heat of August, the reality of our warming planet becomes more pressing.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has reported a significant likelihood that the annual average global temperature will temporarily exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels between 2024 and 2028. This stark warning underscores the urgency for innovative solutions in our fight against climate change.
According to the Guardian, an unprecedented number of national heat records were broken during 2024. A further 130 national monthly temperature records were also broken, along with tens of thousands of local highs at monitoring stations from the Arctic to the South Pacific.
Time to solve agriculture
Humanity faces a critical challenge: we must find sustainable ways to live on this planet. One significant area where change is essential is agriculture. Traditional farming practices are major contributors to climate change, causing deforestation, biodiversity loss, and significant greenhouse gas emissions. We need to rethink food production to mitigate these impacts. Agriculture consumes vast amounts of water, requires extensive arable land, and contributes to deforestation and biodiversity loss. Overfarming depletes soil quality and increases greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating climate change. This model is untenable in the face of our current environmental challenges.
